Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take insurance?
Yes, we take many of the major insurances such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Oscar, Cigna, Oxford and United Health Care. We also take many private pay clients as well and can provide superbill receipts if requested.

I’ve never been to counseling. I’m embarrassed to need help with my problem. Isn’t it bad to need help?
No, not at all! In fact, we think it is a sign of strength to admit that a problem is bigger than one you have handled before. Sometimes when we deal with a lot over time it all adds up and becomes too much to bear. Our skills and things we tried in the past stop working and we need to figure out new ways to deal with our problems. So even thought you’ve handled things on your own, you might feel stuck. Sometimes people say they feel heavy, helpless, lost and overwhelmed. After working with our providers, they feel “lighter”, are more motivated and have the skills to cope with life again. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, we’ll help you identify what your strengths are, how to use them and also develop new coping skills to move past whatever hurdle you are dealing with today.

What’s the difference between talking to you, my best friend or family?
Family and friends are a great source of support. They are sympathetic and care about us. But sometimes that means that our friends or family tell us what we want to hear instead of being 100% honest. While they usually have your best interest at heart, they don’t have skill and training to help you develop tools to get through your troubles.
A professional can help you analyze things more objectively, listen to you without judgment,  approach your situation in a new way, teach you new skills, different perspectives and also help you learn to listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business”. Your friends and family don’t feel burdened by your troubles and you don’t have to worry about trusting them with some potentially sensitive topics. Also, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life. Having a therapist instead of just friends and family can help you preserve your supportive relationships.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from the previous therapy session.

How long will it take?
Depending on your specific needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development. Either way, it is most common to schedule regular weekly sessions initially, and then space them out as you see progress.

If I commit to therapy, what can I expect? How can I get the most out of therapy?
It is important to understand that you will get more results from therapy if you actively participate in the process. The ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you bring what you learn in sessions back into your life. Beyond the work you do in therapy sessions, if you are receptive to “homework”, we can suggest some things you can do outside of therapy to support your progress – such as practicing relaxation skills, journaling on a specific topic, reading a pertinent book, noting particular behaviors or taking action on your goals.

Do you conduct therapy online, phone or in person?
All of the above! Telehealth has become very popular and is a very convenient method that allows many to attend sessions despite chronic illness, transportation, work or weather related issues! It also allows us to see anyone from within NY state. We also see people in person in our local community.

Do you have evening or weekend hours?
Not at this time.
